Patterns of memory and growth
The Albina Library Mural • Portland, OR • 2025
"Patterns of Memory and Growth" is a 25-foot tall mural created in 2025 for the Albina Branch of Multnomah County Libraries, commissioned by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. Drawing from Albina's neighborhood history, the design layers symbols and motifs sourced from multiple rounds of community engagement.
The wall's previously bricked-over window became an opportunity for meaning: a black-and-white center panel that offers a view into a world of color. Shapes allude to the camas flower, indigenous patterns, Oregon's rivers and tree lines, and the structured geometry of city streets and local landmarks. This mural sits within a serene courtyard, a sheltered environment designed to support learning and growth.
“It’s my hope that this mural inspires future generations of library patrons to learn about the history of their surroundings and ways to help shape it’s future.” - Daren
